Creative Music Orchestra
Since 1966, when I received my first clarinet, I have been involved in playing with large ensembles. Through high school and college, these ensembles made up a considerable portion of the music that I was involved with. After moving to the East Coast in 1981, this tradition was furthered through playing with the Sahib Sarbib Multinational Big Band, Bill Dixon’s Black Music Ensemble, William Park and the Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra, and Cecil Taylor’s large New York ensemble.
After returning to the San Francisco Bay Area in the winter of 1995, one of the first things I did was to contact my good friend Glenn Spearman and talk about putting together a large orchestra. We decided to put together a band that was made up of seasoned players along with quite a few of the younger local students who were interested in learning about the new jazz that was taking place in America today.
After several months of long rehearsals, the members of the band began to understand the concept of the music, and the pieces began to formulate and take a shape. We then began a weekly series of concerts at the Berkeley Store Gallery, which is run by a very beautiful and wonderful lady by the name of Bonnies Hughes. The money received from these concerts was pooled together and the result is the recording that you now are listening to.
The first set of pieces was developed in the winter of 1985 when I was Artist-in-Residence in the Black Music division of Bennington College in Vermont. They are formulated from a series of sound movements and rhythmic concepts that I arrived at from my association with BIll Dixon. The fourth piece, Naked Mirror, is derived from a number of lines that I received from Cecil Taylor and then rearranged into the format that is witnessed here. Glenn’s piece, Student Studies, is based on a series of lines that are separated by the different sections of the orchestra taking group solos.
